Gothic Fashion Post 3: Deathrock

We decided to dedicate this week’s fashion post to deathrock specifically. Deathrock can be considered a sub-genre of gothic music or an evolution of punk music often incorporating themes of horror or sci-fi films. Sonically, deathrock shares many qualities with gothic rock, including dark imagery, atmospheric instruments that are often effect-laden (aka- they use a ton of chorus, delay, and reverb), and lyrics which focus on disillusionment and sorrow. However, the two differ in that deathrock is more reminiscent of punk and was definitely influenced by the hardcore scene. This resulted in a much heavier sounding guitars and an edgier sound for the genre. Thus, it earns it’s title, deathrock.

As far as deathrock’s fashion is concerned, it can be viewed as sort of hybrid between gothic fashion and that of hardcore punk. For example, someone who would consider their fashion to be influenced by deathrock might have a mohawk, which could be considered a artifact of the hardcore scene, but they might also have pale make-up similar to that of gothic fashion. Likewise, the clothing can be considered an amalgamation of punk and goth staples. To illustrate this, we found ten pictures which we feel capture the style and fashion trends of deathrock and also appeal to us personally.
